Ethiopia calls for urgent food aid

Published on 22 October 2009 - 9:35pm
More about:

The Ethiopian government has called on the international community to provide urgent food aid.

It made the request at an international gathering of donors meeting to discuss the current drought in East Africa. The drought has left 6.2 million Ethiopians with little or no food. In other East African countries, a further 23 million people are suffering from hunger. But the United Nations World Food Programme has said that, because of shortages, it is unable to offer sufficient aid.

The request for help came as aid organisation Oxfam released a report calling for more than just the provision of emergency aid in response to such humanitarian disasters. It says investment is required to help communities prepare for further droughts by, for example, storing water during the rainy seasons.

Oxfam released its report on the 25th anniversary of the famine that killed more one million Ethiopians.

am Ethiopian and I am sick and tired of this call from the government and the NGO's. I agree with Eyob, it is time the government and we take responsibility. Only fraction of this money will reach the needy anyways...it will end up buying more arms..dammit!

Oxfam does not mention the huge amount of money that the EPRDF regime is spending yearly on armaments and its huge security apparatus which are meant to rule with a heavy hand. First of all the regime should put its priorities right, rather than begging for more help or trying to rid itself of responsibility for the current situaion. The west has done its share, and we are thankful for that. Now it is time that the EPRDF regime should play its part. For instance the EPRDF regime could reduce its military expenditure and allocate more resources for fighting poverty and hunger. Moreover the regime could retract the banning order so that the local NGO's could join with others in giving help to a common cause, which is the eradication of hunger.
