Dutch rights prize for Uganda's Betty Bigombe

Published on 13 March 2010 - 9:01am
More about:

Ugandan peace negotiator Betty Bigombe has received the Geuzen Medal 2010 for her efforts to end her country's civil war.

Ms Bigombe is renowned as one of the main negotiators in the conflict between the Ugandan government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). She is also one of the few people to have negotiated with LRA leader Joseph Kony personally.

The medal, which will be presented to her in the Dutch town of Vlaardingen, honours people who fight for democracy or against dictatorship, discrimination and racism. Last year, the medal went to the Palestinian human rights group Al-Hag and Israeli organisation B'Tselem. Previous recipients include Colombian politician Ingrid Bétancourt and the Anne Frank foundation.
