More about:

The International Criminal Court in The hague has ruled that the trial of Congolese militia leader Germain Katanga on charges of war crimes and crimes against against humanity can go ahead.

The ICC rejected an appeal by the defendant's lawyers for the tribunal not to try him. The trial will begin on 24 November. Mr Katanga, and a fellow defendandt, Mathieu Ngudjolo, the leader of a different militia, face trial for atrocitities committed in February 2003, when their forces attacked the village of Bogoro in Ituri, a mineral-rich region in eastern DRC. Former militia leader Thomas Lubanga is already being tried by the ICC. The tribunal has also issued an arrest warrant for war crimes suspect Bosco Ntaganda.
