Dozens killed in southern Philippines

Published on 13 August 2009 - 8:14am
More about:

At least 45 people have been killed in the south of the Philippines in fighting between government forces and Abu Sayyaf Muslim rebels. Each side suffered more than 20 casualties.

Abu Sayyaf has been conducting a campaign of bomb attacks and kidnapping Christians and foreigners in the southern Philippines for more than 20 years. Experts say Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network helped set up the group.
