Demjanjuk war crimes trial begins

Published on 30 November 2009 - 4:29pm
More about:

The trial of John Demjanjuk for crimes committed during the Second World War has begun in a German court in Munich. It is scheduled to take 35 court days and will last until May.

The 89-year-old defendant was carried into the court on a stretcher, covered in a white blanket. Mr Demjanjuk, who was born in Ukraine, is accused of being involved in the deaths of nearly 28,000 Jews in the Sobibor death camp. Witnesses say he was a guard at the Nazi concentration camp in Poland. He denies this.
