Two Norwegians sentenced to death in the Democratic Republic of Congo will not face execution.
The Congolese government has assured the Norwegian Foreign Minister that the sentence will not be carried out. In DRC, death sentences are often commuted to life imprisonment.
The two Norwegians have been convicted of espionage and the murder of a Congolese taxi driver in May. They have been fined more than 40 million euros and ordered to pay tens of thousands of euros compensation to the taxi driver's family.
The two men, who are 27 and 28 years old, say they are innocent. The defence team says the trial was unfair, because it was held in French, which the Norwegians do not speak. It is not clear what they were doing in DRC. There has been speculation that the two were mercenaries or were trying to set up a private security firm.
