Cuba arrests 30 women protesters

Published on 17 March 2010 - 9:28pm
More about:

The Cuban police have arrested 30 women who were holding a protest march in the capital Havana.

The march, organised by the movement Women In White was led by the mother of the political prisoner Orlando Zapata, who died last month after a hunger strike.

More than 300 supporters of the Cuban government jeered the women protesters and tried to stop the march.

Eventually, female police officers arrested the women and put them on two coaches to be taken to an unknown destination.

Women In White has been holding demonstrations since early this week to mark the arrest of 75 dissidents seven years ago. Fifty of the dissidents are still in jail.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International has demanded the immediate release of all Cuban political prisoners.
