Convicted former Thai PM arrives in Cambodia

Published on 10 November 2009 - 1:36pm
More about:

Former prime minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra has arrived in Cambodia amid a storm of diplomatic controversy. He landed at a military base in the capital and has been escorted to his new home under tight security.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has appointed Mr Thaksin as an economic advisor to the government. He is due to address an audience of 300 economists on Thursday.

In 2006, Mr Thaksin was forced out of office by the Thai army and has since been sentenced in absentia to a jail term of two years for corruption.

Thailand is furious at the warm welcome Mr Thaksin has received in Cambodia and has withdrawn its ambassador in protest.
