Clinton calls for better housing in Haiti

Published on 8 July 2009 - 11:49am
More about:

Bill Clinton, the special UN envoy to Haiti, is on a three-day visit to Haiti.

The former US president has called for the construction of sturdier housing able to withstand the severe tropical storms that plague Haiti during hurricane season, which lasts from June to November. In 2008 the country's capital, Port au Prince, was devastated by a hurricane that claimed nearly 800 lives.

Mr Clinton's task as envoy to Haiti is to rebuild the country. Hundreds of millions of euros have been promised by donor countries for the construction of houses and infrastructure, and to improve education and health care. Approximately 200,000 jobs are to be created within two years.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Seventy percent of the population is unemployed and 80 percent survive on less than two dollars per day.
