Chinese police arrest hundreds in Xinjiang

Published on 2 August 2009 - 5:25pm
More about:

Police in China's northwestern province of Xinjiang have arrested a further 319 people in connection with disturbances that left at least 197 dead.

The unrest began in early July when Muslim Uighurs in the city of Urumqi attacked Han Chinese, prompting two days of ethnic violence. Around 1,000 people were arrested in the aftermath of the violence. State media said some 600 other were arrested later on. It was the region's worst ethnic violence in decades. Uighurs have been complaining of discrimination and repression by China's dominant Han ethnic group for years.
