Chinese media refute Turkish genocide claim

Published on 14 July 2009 - 10:49am
More about:

Chinese state media are demanding Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan take back his comments that genocide is being committed against the Uighurs in China's Xinjiang province.

The English-language China Daily says just 46 of the 184 people killed in the region have been from the Uighur community.

The paper accuses the Turkish leader of twisting the facts as well as meddling with China's domestic affairs. The Chinese Uighurs are an Turkic ethnic group and make up nearly 50 percent of China's Xinjiang province.
