A Chinese government spokesperson says Beijing "resolutely opposes" plans by the Dalai Lama to visit Taiwan next week.
The Tibetan spiritual leader was invited to visit Taiwan by seven mayors and local government leaders from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Earlier today, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou approved a visit by the Dalai Lama "to pray for the souls of the deceased and seek blessing for the survivors of the typhoon". President Ma emphasised that the visit was purely humanitarian and religious and would not negatively affect cross straits ties.
Beijing's condemnation of the visit came just hours after President Ma confirmed a visit to Taiwan. China views the Dalai Larmer as a rebel leader working for Tibetan independence. Two earlier visits to Taiwan by the Tibetan spiritual leader brought sharp condemnation from Beijing.
Two weeks ago, Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan and caused the worst flooding in the island's history. So far 543 people have been confirmed dead and 111 missing.
