China holds Xinjiang terrorist suspects

Published on 16 September 2009 - 3:31pm
More about:

Police in the Xinjiang region of China have arrested six people suspected of plotting terrorist attacks. They have confiscated over 20 devices and a large amount of chemicals for making explosives.

The arrests follow the recent unrest in Xinjiang's provincial capital Urumqi. At the beginning of July, there were clashes there between the Islamic Uighur community and Han Chinese. Official figures say 197 people died in the rioting.

The Uighurs complain they are discriminated against and suffer repression by the Chinese authorities. They also object to numbers of Han Chinese moving to Xinjiang. In turn, the Han Chinese argue that the Uighurs are responsible for the trouble and complain that the authorities are too lenient with them.
