China’s Hu cancels G8 attendance

Published on 8 July 2009 - 9:10am
More about:

Chinese President Hu Jintao has cancelled his attendance at this week’s G8 conference in the Italian city of L'Aquila. President Hu was already in Italy, but returned to China following the outbreak of violence in its northwest province of Xinjiang.

More than 1400 members of the province’s Muslim Uighur minority have now been arrested after weekend clashes in which at least 156 people have died and more than 800 injured.

The Uighurs are protesting against what they see as Han Chinese oppression. It is the biggest outburst of ethnic violence the region has seen in decades.
