Catalonian village wants to secede from Spain

Published on 14 September 2009 - 8:54am
More about:

The residents of the Catalonian village of Arenys de Munt have voted for independence of their region in a referendum.

No less than 96 percent of the voters want the autonomous region of Catalonia to secede from Spain. Turnout in the referendum was 41 percent. About 100 right-wing protesters who want Catalonia to remain an integral part of Spain held a demonstration in Arenys de Munt.

The Spanish government tried to ban the referendum in the village of 8,000 inhabitants, even though it was in no way binding. Madrid may have feared it would inspire separatists in Catalonia and the Basque country to demand similar referendums.

The spanish democracy is a fake one. The old fascist dictator said his famous last words: 'everything is tied and well tied up'. Which means that everything will remain the same as it was during the dictatorship. The same balance of powers. The same privileges for big wealths created during the bloody dictatorship (it was a genocide, spain has hundreds of thousands of bodies buried under higways, etc). After ETA killed franco's heir, carrero blanco, the dictator decided to point a different one to succeed him: the spanish king, juan carlos. After franco's death, they imposed a very unfair constitution under the threat of militars, who where menacing to make another dictatorship unless certain laws were put on this constitution. And the most important one: the amnesty law for the assassins who perpetrated the genocide during the dictatorship. And all their simpathyzers infiltrated in politics and justice. Until today. That is spain's democracy. One brave spanish judge, the famous Baltasar Garzón, tried to investigate franco's crimes as he did with pinochet ones. But his very companions SUED HIM for doing his work, prosecute crimes. For trying to investigate the genocide. That's why I say we have a fake democracy. In Germany or France it's illegal to be a fascist or nazi, and to point it in public. But not in spain. Here, fascist and nazis are protected by justice and politics. In this Catalan poll, they used a falangist attorney to sue this little poll, and allowed a falange manifestation (a nazi group) the very day and the very place of this little poll. Just to try to threat the inhabitants. And this was made by the spanish government. Spain has a lot to learn yet from french and english democracy. Visca Catalunya

I too was there. It was a great day, a celebration of democracy. The big question, of course, is this: if a local council is not even allowed to support (far less call) a consultation of this kind, because the Spanish government goes to the courts to prevent them from doing so, what democratic, peaceful route is open for Catalonia to decide whether it wants to recover its independence, after centuries of being subordinated to Spain. This is what Spanish politicians are being called upon to say, loudly and clearly. Otherwise, if not democratic channel is allowed, some (hopefully, very few) might be tempted to resort to other, violent methods to try and achieve freedom for Catalonia. In the meantime, media such as Intereconomia TV, La Razón, ABC and the usual bunch of radio stations and newspapers, are endgulging themselves in a feast of hate programmes against the Catalans, that only makes things clearer for the (growing number of) Catalans that are fed up with Spain.

I am catalan, i was there, it was a great day, a great democratic event, to tell my grand-children one day. When franco died the Spanish army imposed a fake constitution so rigid that it can't be change, to make sure that things stayed the same.We want freddom and a bunch of fascists(can you imagined that hitlers party was allowed to demostrate in germany or that hitler appointed a king , well that's Spanish democracy. Please unveil the greatests lie in Europe for the last 30 years, and go on to win the pulitzer prize
