Catalonia considers bullfight ban

Published on 5 March 2010 - 3:02pm
More about:

In Spain, the Community of Madrid wants to declare bullfighting part of the region's cultural inheritance. If the regional government agrees, bullfighting would be given protected status and become eligible for regional subsidies.

The Community of Catalonia, on the other hand, is considering banning the spectacle. If it did, it would be the first region in Spain to do so.

On the Spanish-owned Canary Islands, which lie 100 kilometres off the coast of West Africa, bullfighting has been forbidden since 1991.
