In the state of Iowa in the United States, a cat has been diagnosed with influenza A(H1N1). The authorities say it is the first time the virus, also known as swine flu and - in the Netherlands - as Mexican flu, has been found in a feline.
The owner of the cat had flu symptoms before the animal became ill and probably passed on the virus. The cat has been treated and is recovering. There is no vaccine for pets against the disease.
