A car bomb has exploded in the northern city of Bilbao in Spain's Basque Country, killing one person. The bomb went off in a car park in the city's Santa Isabel neighbourhood. Authorities say the victim was police officer Eduardo Puelles.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but similar bomb attacks have in the past been carried out the Basque separatist group ETA. While the group has been considerably weakened due to a series of raids and arrests earlier this year, they threatened a resurgence of violence when the new socialist government was formed six weeks ago in the Basque Country.
Analysts say ETA is losing support for its violent methods, although polls indicate a majority of Basques may still be in favour of independence from Spain.
