Bulgaria's government has decided to grant asylum to an inmate from the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, a spokesman said Thursday.
The decision, taken at a cabinet meeting Wednesday, is subject to approval from parliament. Last week Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said Bulgaria would pick one out of two possible detainees after studying their profiles.
He did not specify their nationalities, but said the two possible candidates for asylum were not facing any charges and were not considered trouble prisoners while in Guantanamo.
Newspaper reports said that the government was likely to take in a Syrian man, together with his wife and six children.
