Britons arrested by Iranian coast guard

Published on 30 November 2009 - 11:10pm
More about:

The Iranian coast guard has arrested five Britons in the Persian Gulf. The British Foreign Office says the five were sailing in a yacht from Bahrain to Dubai and believes they entered Iranian waters by accident.

The arrest took place five days ago. The five are still in custody. British Foreign Minister David Miliband has said he hopes the situation can be resolved quickly.

In March 2007, 15 British sailors were also seized by Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf. They were eventually released unharmed by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
