The Yugoslavia Tribunal in The Hague in the Netherlands has found two Bosnian Serb cousins guilty of war crimes.
The United Nations court found Milan and Sredoje Lukic guilty of the murder of at least 132 Bosnian Muslims during the Bosnia civil war, which lasted from March 1992 to November 1995.
The murders took place in the town of Visegrad in July 1992. Most of the Muslims were burned alive after being locked in a house that was then set on fire. Those who tried to escape from the flames were shot dead. The court also found Milan Lukic guilty of further murders of Bosnian Muslims.
Milan Lukic, who is 41 years old, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. His cousin Sredoje was sentenced to 30 years in jail because there was no proof of his direct involvement in the burnings. However, "by his presence and by being armed,” said a judge, “he substantially contributed to the deaths.”
The two men were members of a paramilitary organisation known as the White Eagles, and also as the Avengers. The organization worked with police and military units between 1992 and 1994 to terrorise Muslim communities.
