Bosnia: a bloody and disorderly arrest

Published on : 23 January 2006 - 1:00am | By International Justice Tribune
More about:

One dead, two injured. That was the outcome of a European Union forces (EUFOR) operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina to arrest a suspected war criminal. On January 5, in the small town of Rogatica, in Eastern Republika Srpska, EUFOR troops attempted to arrest Dragomir Abazovic, a Bosnian Serb wanted for war crimes. After identifying the suspect, EUFOR troops came under fire from Abazovic's wife and their 11 year old son. In the shoot out that ensued, the wife was killed, the son was seriously injured and Abazovic tried to commit suicide. The incident sparked controversy in Bosnia, notably because the local police force and SIPA, the specialized agency in charge of arresting war criminals, were not involved in the operation. Abazovic, for whom the Cantonal Court of Sarajevo had issued a detention order in 2001, is not on the list of ICTY suspects nor is it clear whether the ICTY had approved the indictment issued by the cantonal court. In addition, the new War Crimes Chamber had not issued a warrant for his arrest. Consequently, an internal investigation is currently being carried out by EUFOR and by the local prosecutor.
