Berlin wants to sell spare flu vaccines

Published on 7 December 2009 - 11:21pm
More about:

German Health Minister Philipp Roesler says Germany wants to sell millions of spare A (H1N1) vaccines because far fewer people than expected have come forward for inoculation.

Berlin ordered 50 million doses of the vaccine for its' 80-million-strong population but only 4 million people have come forward for vaccination. Minister Roesler says Germany has 2.2 million doses of vaccine for sale.

The surplus is partly due to the fact that it was originally thought that two shots were needed instead of one. Several countries have expressed interest in purchasing the vaccines including Afghanistan and Ukraine. However, Berlin says that the vaccines could be donated to countries who do not have the means to provide vaccine for their at-risk populations.

German health officials say the pandemic influenza death toll has now risen to 86.
