Berlin agrees to bodyscanner trial

Published on 12 January 2010 - 10:12pm
More about:

The German government says it wants to participate in the bodyscanner trial that the Netherlands intend to carry out at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière told Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin of Berlin's decision earlier today.

The German government is not entirely convinced that the procedure is risk-free but Minister Hirsch Ballin has promised to share all the results of the bodyscanner trial with Berlin.

The Netherlands is anxious to persuade other European countries to utilise the bodyscanner to identify possible terrorists.

Earlier today, the EU Justice Commissioner-designate told a confirmation hearing that she was doubtful that the bodyscanner's can solve airport security problems. Viviane Reding told EU parliamentarians, "we have to look at less intrusive and more privacy friendly ways to detect explosives".
