Baroness Catherine Ashton, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, is visiting the Gaza Strip, where she will be inspecting a food distribution centre. She says she wants to see what happens to EU relief goods with her own eyes.
Baroness Ashton is one of the most senior EU officials to have visited Gaza recently. Israel often denies foreign visitors access to the territory and many officials will not go there because of the presence of Hamas.
Shortly after the baroness drove into the Gaza Strip, Palestinian militants fired rockets into Israel, killing a Thai farm worker. It was the first time for more than a year that anyone has been killed by a Palestinian rocket.
