Army cracks down on opposition protests in Iran

Iran's army has once again met opposition protests with a heavy-handed response in the capital Tehran. Supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi were dispersed by tear gas and seven people were arrested, including three of Mr Moussavi's important advisors.

On Sunday, anti-government demonstrations in Tehran and other Iranian cities ended in the death of eight people, various sources have revealed. One of them was Mr Moussavi's nephew, who is said to have been shot in the back. At least three hundred people were arrested, including former foreign minister Ebrakim Yazdi, one of the key figures of Iran's outlawed Freedom Movement. Mr Yazdi has also been arrested at previous protests.

Various countries, including the United States and Germany, have condemned Iran's heavy-handed response to the protests.
