Argentina stalls on gay marriage

Published on 1 December 2009 - 10:16am
More about:

An Argentinian court has prevented what was to be the first same-sex marriage in Latin America. Two Argentinian men were due to tie the knot in Buenos Aires today but a court has taken a last-minute decision to refer the case to the Constitutional Court. A previous ruling had given the couple permission to wed.

The two men both have aids and wanted to get married on World Aids Day. They say they will go to city hall for the ceremony regardless and will hold a protest if officials refuse to seal their union.
