Tens of thousands of Maoist supporters have taken to the streets of Nepal in anti-government protests.
Demonstrators in the capital Kathmandu clashed with riot police at the complex housing government offices. Police said truncheons and tear gas were used after protesters attempted to break through security cordons.
The Kathmandu protest was organised by the Maoists who lost power in May. They were voted into office in democratic elections last year, but President Baran Yadav dismissed their government after it attempted to sack the commander of the army.
The Maoists argue that, despite the abolition of the monarchy last year, rule by the people has still not been achieved. They are calling for more mass demonstrations to take place on Friday.
