Amnesty says 30,000 Georgians still displaced

Published on 7 August 2009 - 1:35pm
More about:

The human rights organisation Amnesty International reports that there are still around 30,000 displaced people one year after the five-day war between Georgia and Russia. Some 130,000 Georgians fled the breakaway republic of South Ossetia during the conflict. Amnesty writes in its report that people suspected of war crimes have still not been tried.

Today Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili will give a speech commemorating the war. The country's citizens will also observe a minute of silence.

A commemoration was held in Gori, one of the city's which suffered the most from the fighting. Around 1,000 Georgian students took part in an anti-Russian demonstration.
