Amnesty honour for Aung San Suu Kyi

Published on 27 July 2009 - 7:37pm
More about:

Amnesty International has named Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi its Ambassador of Conscience for 2009.

The jury wrote that she had earned the organisation's highest human rights honour for the many years in which she has remained "a symbol of hope, courage and the undying defence of human rights".

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has spent nearly 20 years either in prison or under house arrest on the orders of the military junta in Myanmar.

Tomorrow is the last day of her trial for alleged violation of the rules of her house arrest. It is generally thought the junta will impose a new sentence to ensure she will not be free should elections be held in Myanmar next year.
