Alleged albino killers on trial in Burundi

Published on 29 May 2009 - 1:57pm
More about:

In Burundi, the Public Prosecutor's Office has demanded jail sentences ranging between one year and life imprisonment against 11 people accused of killing albinos.

The killings took place in last months of 2008 and the first months of this year. Most of the albino killings took place in the province of Ruyigi, east of the capital Bujumbura.

The police believe a gang sold organs and limbs of the killed albinos to clients in Tanzania, where many people are convinced the body parts of albinos- which are used in the preparation of potions - have magical powers.
