Algeria v. Egypt playoff sparks diplomatic row

Published on 19 November 2009 - 11:30pm
More about:

Algeria’s win in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Egypt has sparked a diplomatic row between the two countries.

The match was played on neutral ground in Sudan. Egypt has withdrawn its ambassador in Algiers, claiming Egyptians have been attacked in Algeria. But Algeria is outraged because Egyptian fans threw stones at the Algerian players’ bus in Cairo at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Sudan is angered at Egypt’s accusations that Khartoum failed to take sufficient measures to protect Egyptian fans against violence from Algerian supporters.
