Al-Qaeda says it kidnapped Italian couple

Published on 28 December 2009 - 4:46pm
More about:

The North African branch of al-Qaeda says it kidnapped an Italian couple ten days ago in the West African country of Mauritania, in connection "with the crimes of the Italian government in Afghanistan and Iraq."

An audio message broadcast by satellite station Al-Arabiya showed a photo of the couple surrounded by armed men. They were kidnapped on 18 December near the Malian border.

A month ago, three Spanish aid workers were abducted in the same area.
