Assadullah Sarwary, former head of the feared Afghan intelligence services under the pro-Communist regime that fell in 1992, has been in jail in Kabul for 14 years. Since his trial began at the end of December, he has not had ongoing legal assistance, and according to the Washington Post, none of the prosecution witnesses have presented direct evidence against him. Yet, on February 25, the national security court sentenced him to death. Sarwary is the first person to be tried for war crimes in an Afghan court. In October, two former Afghan generals from the same regime were convicted in the Netherlands [IJT-33-34], and a former warlord was convicted in Great Britain in July [IJT-30].
