50 Guantánamo inmates to be held indefinitely

Published on 22 January 2010 - 11:04pm
More about:

The US government is planning to keep some 50 Guantánamo detainees locked up without trial, according to the Washington Post.

A government spokesperson says the inmates are too dangerous to release and evidence is too slim to try them. The news comes exactly a year after President Barack Obama ordered the prison at Guantánamo Bay closed within a year. Over 200 prisoners remain in detention there.

Those who will not be released may be transferred to a prison in rural Illinois. Thirty-five others will be prosecuted in federal or military courts. At least 110 prisoners have been cleared for release, either to be repatriated or sent on to a third country.
