30 killed in attack on mosque in Pakistan

Published on 4 December 2009 - 1:29pm
More about:

At least 30 people have been killed in an attack on a mosque in the northern Pakistani city of Rawalpindi.

The building was attacked by armed men during Friday prayers. The mosque is close to the city's military headquarters.

Police say shots and explosions could also be heard in the vicinity of the mosque.

The Taliban and al-Qaeda have carried out a number of attacks in Pakistan in recent months.

The attacks are in response to an offensive against Muslim extremists by the Pakistani army in the South Waziristan region.
