Another Dutch soldier has been killed while on duty in Afghanistan. The commander of the Dutch forces in Afghanistan, General Peter van Uhm, announced that the victim is 26-year-old Kevin van de Rijdt, a corporal in a commando unit from Roosendaal.
Corporal van de Rijdt died during a firefight with Taliban rebels near Deh Rawod, in Uruzgan province. He was serving with Task Force 55, the same special unit that discovered a large cache of bomb-making materials last week. Corporal van de Rijdt is the 20th Dutch soldier to have died in Afghanistan but the first green beret.
Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop has sent his condolences to the family.
