You won't find Rotterdam's newest hotel in the guidebooks

More about:

There's plenty of work on the Maasvlakte, close to Rotterdam, but the roads you need to travel to get to work are clogging up. The solution: a temporary hotel for workers who don't want to face the commute.

The guests at this hotel on the Maasvlakte (literally Maas Flats, an area of windswept reclaimed land, once sand banks, along the Dutch coast near Rotterdam) are mostly foreigners working six-month contracts in this dockland area. But this Hotel At Work as it's called, is quite far removed from the bustle of city life.

Hotel At Work is not a very homely place. Located between containers, modern wind turbines and power plants, it consists of a number of prefab units which are soon to house as many as 1,500 guests. Both Dutch and foreign workers can make use of its facilities. The employers will pay for the accommodation, which means the workers have no say in where they spend the night.

As such a concentration of men often attracts prostitutes, additional measures have been taken. The area has been completely fenced off and visitors need a pass to enter.

The first guests have already moved in and are enthusiastic about the short time it now takes to get to work - just six minutes. However, they miss the hustle and bustle of the city. As one hotel guest comments "There's not even a shop around here". Clearly, if the workers had a choice, they would be in the centre of Rotterdam, because downtown there's always something to do, but - there again - what about the journey to work?

These guys aren't too happy with so many restrictions at this hotel, they don't have any form of entertainment inside the hotel besides the TV. It's a work hotel but still, why did they call it a hotel since they can't even bring visitors inside. It certainly doesn't look like hotels in Orlando FL...
