Working past pension age: not a big deal

Published on : 25 June 2010 - 12:54pm | By Thijs Westerbeek van Eerten (Photo: RNW)
More about:

The debate about increasing pension age from 65 to 67 has been a proverbial hot potato in Dutch politics recently. During the parliamentary election campaign, it was all voters heard about.

But in many countries working for longer is not such a big deal, says foreign affairs commentator Bernard Hammelburg. In Germany and Israel, for instance, pension age has already been raised to 67. And in America, continuing to work past pension age is the rule rather than the exception.

Mr Hammelburg thinks wisdom and experience could be valued a little more. And people who want to continue working, should be able to.
