Wife of Tibetan filmmaker draws strength from dissident Nobel Prize

More about:

From October 2007 until March 2008, Dhondup Wangchen travelled through Tibet with his camera. He filmed ordinary people as they said what they thought about the Olympic Games, which were due to take place in Beijing in the summer of 2008.

Shortly after he had smuggled the footage out of the country, Dhondup Wangchen was arrested. His wife Lhamo Tso now screens her husband's documentary all over the world to call attention to China's violation of the human rights of the Tibetan people.

"From an early age, my husband was someone who dared to fight against injustice. But when I saw his film for the first time, I was surprised. It amazed me that an illiterate person like him could make something like that." Lhamo Tso was already living in India with her family. She lives in Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama also has his residence.

She has never blamed her husband for the break-up of the family. "I am proud of my husband. He sees the fate of the Tibetan people as more important than his own life."

Dhondup Wangchen was sent to a labour camp. Lhamo Tso: "He contracted hepatitis there, but he hardly receives any medical care. I hope that international pressure can help him get better treatment."

The jailed Tibetan's wife draws strength from the fact that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese dissident arrested in the same year as her husband for his appeal for greater freedom of speech. "He is a Chinese man who spoke out against the authorities. If more people like him stood up and dared to tell the truth, something would have to change."

do you agree that US should fight terrorists? then you should agree that China is fighting extremists who are trying to make terrorist attacks to Chinese people and to separate Tibet from China. Wageningen should do its job which is education and science, and shouldn't stand in the terrorist side against 99.99% Chinese people!
