A marked drop in the number of volunteer workers is worrying Dutch organisations which rely on them. Local fire brigades and animal ambulances are reporting a lack of citizens prepared to work in the general interest.
According to 2007 figures, 44 percent of Dutch adults were active volunteers, whereas today it's only half that number. The consequences are far-reaching.
