Why doesn’t President Barack Obama get tough and force Israel to stop expanding its settlements? Why is the ‘Two State’ solution still just a dream? After all, both the Israelis and the Palestinians know there will never be peace in the region without the United States. Is the US really not able to speed up the process?
According to RNW senior foreign affairs correspondent Bernard Hammelburg the problem doesn’t lie as much with the famous pro-Israel lobby as with the devout Baptists and Evangelicals in the South and Midwest of the US. For this large and powerful group, Israel is the country of the Bible. They will stand by it, even if they don’t particularly like Jews.
That’s why a large majority in the US Congress is firmly pro-Israel. That’s also why Israel is often called USA’s 51st state.
