In many countries, women's football got off to a faltering start but is now rapidly gaining in popularity. In the Netherlands, football is now the second largest team sport for women. But in Turkey, the challenges are greater for young women who are eager to kick a ball about. A women's team was recently disbanded by the board of their own football club, for a most peculiar reason.
The players are taking a stand against the decision, and they have the might of Turkey's powerful football association on their side. The association is calling for the women to be allowed back on the pitch as soon as possible.
