Tulips yield the Dutch economy over 100 million euros a year. But to produce these beautiful flowers, the Dutch use a lot of pesticides. These spread through the air and water, and there are growing concerns that they're posing a threat to public health.
Researchers think that the pesticides could be extremely harmful for people who come into regular contact with them. Many people who live near flower fields, especially those with small children, are becoming increasingly concerned about the threat.

I don't agree that all bulbs need pesticides. I visited organic tulips farmers in Holland and they grow the best available quality tulips available. The colors are brighter and the flowers last longer.
Together we can make a difference and keep this planet healthy. It is important to promote the organic bulb industry. Being negative to conventional farmers doesn't solve the problem. My goal is to promote positive change in the flower bulb industry. We are the only supplier of organic tulip bulbs in the USA. Our challenge is to create a nationwide market for organic bulbs in the USA, if gardeners/city parks etc start to buy organic bulbs, the organic growers will have a chance to expand their good work! This results in a reduction of pesticide exposure in our environment. Feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback. www.ecotulips.com
Dr Henk Tennekes - a Dutch toxicologist as produced a book called 'The Systemic Insecticides - A disaster inthe Making' which shows the vast amount of pesticides being used in tulip fields. The thing to understand is that these new pesticides - the neo-nicotinoids - are INSIDE the plants and flowers - they are not applied externally. When bumblebees and honeybees collect pollen and nectar from the tulips they are poisoned - so Dutch tulips are killing millions of bumblebees and honeybees every year,in Holland, the UK and around the world

Must just about everything we eat, drink, smell be filled with pesticides? Can't we just accept things as nature created them - some perfect, some less? It is an obssession that everything must be just right, even at the risk of cancer or whatever else. Of course, the bottom line is: profits. Same old same.
Cash crops always run into this poison race! Lovely Tulips need not be in this race, for the sake of the lovely people of Holland!
