Sex education starts in first grade

More about:

In the Netherlands children sometimes start receiving sex education as early as the age of five. Since they are already confronted with so many mentions of sex in their everyday lives, especially on television and the Internet, schools feel it is their duty to make sure the children are properly educated on this issue. This week, which is ‘Spring-Fever Week’, schools received a teaching package for all age groups.

The Rutgers Nisso Groep, or the Dutch Expert Centre on Sexuality, has developed a sex education instruction package in cooperation with the Dutch public health service (GGD). Ineke van der Vlugt, who works at the centre, says it is important to start giving sex education in the first grade of primary school.

“Many parents are shy when it comes to the topic and think that they will start telling their children when they have reached the age of puberty. But by then it is already too late. Then children do not really feel like discussing sexuality with their parents. They will look for information elsewhere.”

The Regenboog Montessori School in Amsterdam is enthusiastic about the sex education instruction lessons. Teacher Corita Homma tells children in the first grade about the difference between boys and girls and about falling in love. There is a lot of giggling in her class when the children have to say the names they use when talking about their sexual organs. Mrs Homma says:

“It’s all part of the game. Perhaps what is most important is that we are not secretive about things. We want children to learn that sex is as natural as eating, drinking and sleeping.”

Between a quarter and a third of the 7,000 primary schools in the Netherlands are using the lessons.

I have no idea what you people are tought about our country. LOL. But our country is far from stupid, we feel love, and enjoy sex just as much as any other country in this world! News flash as well, canada as a whole IS NOT in debt. Ontario as a province is in debt! And yes we have problems with our government sometime, however, at least we dont ellect officals who only care about war, and so on..... Every country in this world should know canada and the people that live in it, Love soo much, and have really big hearts, if we didn't like you say, then we wouldn't always be running to the aid of other countries that have little to nothing, or countries that have just been hit by natural disasters, or countries at war!
Maybe you should educate youselves a little more about what you think you know about our country! As far as sexual education in schools, how are childern supose to tell their parents when something is wrong, or something has happened to them if they are tought that this subject is to be talk about socially, and in the open???? This subject should be left to the child(ern) parents! Not to the public!!

I have mixed feelings about watching this video. In my opinion, educating the parents to teach their own children about this topic is better than having the schools do it; especially at such an early age.

I think that ten to twelve years of age, just prior to puberty, is the best time to begin this education. At five and six years of age, most children do not need this exposure.

Parents are useless and deranged thing king a fully ovulating 6 year old with breasts is a child.

YOU NEVER LEAVE IT TO PARENTS. TEN OR 12 IS WAY TOO LATE. THEY NEED 100S OF HOURS OF LEARNING BEFORE 10. tHEY NEED TO LEARN TO BE COMPLTELY RELAXED AND TO WANT TO KILL ANYONE USING LANGUAGE LIKE SLUT OR WHORE.

so they have no notion of puritan morality around sex only th same be nice dont bully morality that applies to everything, They need to be experts on all aspects from contrception to emotions before things start, not a 5 min bs lesson.

There is no exposure any more than a maths lesson

Sex education is not the business of any school. Where are these kids parents to explain to them the birds and the bees?

Spikeysonic 30 October 2011 - 2:15pm

WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? PARENTS ARE USELESS THEY DONT TEACH ANYTHING. YOU NEVER TRUST A PARENT TO DO ANYTHING.

PARENTS have no teaching qualifications, no understanding of biology, psychology, they dont have teaching tools, no electronic boards, no plastic models, to condom training teaching aids, hence your country having the highest teen pregancy rate in the western world

A wise move by the Dutch school. I just love the way the kids are reacting to the information...so sweetly innocent and natural. We have a programme ARSH( Adolescent Reproductive & Sexual Health) programme by health deptt, govt of India, but it is yet to take roots as nobody want to face the adolescent boys and girls with this topic.

Online college is capitalists' advertisment just like tax return in Canada. China has to promote love more than sex due to terrible imbalance between genders; also, marrige is a generator of production. Canadians are not qualified to freely enjoy love but sex, because this country is in debt. Love and sex are supposed to be most harmonious and cause and effect, people made them oppositions and commercialised for powers. In today's economy, it's about balance between love and sex; between socialism and capitalism.
