Royal address to RNW's microfinance debate

Published on : 25 January 2010 - 8:02pm | By Eric Beauchemin (RNW)
More about:

RNW video of the speech given by HRH Princess Máxima, in which she welcomes microfinance being looked at realistically and critically. Her address was given to those attending RNW's Microfinance: who profits? event in The Hague.

The princess was there not only because of the Dutch royal family's longstanding connections with RNW, but more importantly in her role as a Special Advisor to the United Nations on this very issue.

Princess Máxima began by addressing - in Spanish - Linda Flores, a tortilla baker from Nicaragua who also attended the RNW event.

In her speech, the princess warned that some microfinance institutions (MFIs) attach greater importance to their own profit than sustainable development. Microfinance, she explained, needs always to be embedded in a total package in order to combat poverty effectively.

She added that small entrepreneurs such as Linda Flores (RNW video portrait) need to be able to send their children to school.

Great speech by your lovely Princess Máxima, and it is a treat to see her laugh during the comic act.
