The 1942 Battle of the Java Sea has been commemorated at a restrained ceremony in the Indonesian city of Surabaya.
Seventy years ago, a Japanese invasion fleet sank three Dutch naval vessels off the coast of what was then a colony, the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. 915 sailors on the Dutch ships lost their lives in the attack. The battle was also commemorated in the Netherlands with a church service attended by Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. This report by RNW correspondent Edwin Mooibroek.
