Princess Laurentien worried about low literacy levels in Europe

Published on : 7 September 2011 - 2:10pm | By Eric Beauchemin (Screenshot: NCRV TV)
More about:

Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands is concerned about low literacy levels in Europe. In a wide-ranging interview with the Dutch public broadcaster NCRV she said that 80 million people in Europe can't read well enough.

What is even more alarming, said the princess, is that 20% of 15-year-olds in the continent can't read well enough to function properly in society. The highest levels of illiteracy among Europe's young people are in Lithuania and Austria. But the princess, who is a popular author of children's books, was shocked that the Netherlands comes in 10th place.

The princess has chaired a foundation that promotes reading and writing for over a decade. She said Dutch society is now confronting the issue, but many people are still ashamed to admit that they cannot read.
