Practical training on a real fishing boat is not new but a new combined training on offer here in the Netherlands certainly is. The specially adapted fishing boat PD 147 from Urk teaches young fishermen the trade at sea, while keeping in contact with college which provides training courses for fishermen. Special attention is paid to sustainable fishing.
Young sailors were of course always able to jump on a fishing boat to learn the ropes, but they would only learn the skills that were required at the time. This meant that sometimes all they learnt at sea was how to gut fish. The PD 147 is specially equipped to combine practice and theory.
Sustainability
Sustainable fishing has drastically changed fishing practices, making it vital to improve training. To gain a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) hallmark, fishermen have to learn to strike a balance between environmentally-friendly fishing and catching enough fish to keep the business going.
