Colombia's Isla Grande, a beautiful island set among coral reefs in the Rosario Archipelago, is facing an enormous threat. Work on the nearby historic metropolis of Cartagena de Indias could destroy it.
Isla Grande is part of the Rosario Islands Coral Reef National Park and attracts some very important tourists, including heads of state, Hollywood stars, tycoons and even drug barons. They all bring vast sums of money with them and this helps Isla Grande financially support the Rosario National Park.
A dyke running from Cartagena has maintained the balance between salt and sweet water for about 300 years and also created some truly remarkable coral reefs. However, island residents say climate change and work on the dyke has caused pollution and is threatening the existence of the coral reefs.
